The art of Lu Schaper
Welcome to my website. My way of painting has changed over the years, but now I have found a style that really suits me. We call it Shanghai Expressionism, influenced by European expressionists and cubists, but with a distinctive Shanghainese soul in the selection of themes. I would prefer that you look at my current style first by clicking on the picture to the left.
Before I found my current style, I painted in a variety of different styles, ranging from impressionism to early experiments with expressionism. There is in particular a clear distinction between my style when I lived in Asia and my first years in Europe. You can sample my style from those first years in France by clicking on the picture to the left.
Before I came to Europe, I have lived and worked for many years in China, Malyasia and Singapore. I especially worked on a series of rather nostalgic paintings based on the subject of Old Shanghai, including the qipao or cheonsam dresses that the Shanghai girls used to wear. You can sample my style from that period by clicking on the picture to the right.
Although colourful oil paintings are by far the most important in my output, I also like to try other art forms. The most important of these is Chinese ink, for which I use the traditional techniques that I learned in China, including my stay at the Beijing University, but with modern themes. You can sample my Chinese Ink works by clicking on the picture to the right.
I am a Shanghainese artist, who attended Fine Art universities in Shanghai and Beijing, and later went to Malaysia and Singapore. Since 2002 I am living and working in Europe, first in France and now in the Netherlands. You can find more about me by clicking on the picture to the left.
Throughout the years I had many exhibitions, in China, Malaysia, Singapore, France, the Netherlands and coming up Germany. To get an impression of these exhibitions, please click on the picture to the left.
Throughout the years, there have been a number of publications about me and my work, including two brochures, as well as interviews in magazines and newspapers, amd a regular column in Shanghai Weekly. You can see a selection of my publications by clicking to the right.
Apart from a professional painter, I am a keen amateur photographer. My artistic point of view is of course frequently reflected in the themes of the pictures I take. You can see a selection of my photographs by clicking to the right, which will take you to my Flickr page.
